August 12th, 2019 Supply Update: Local NC watermelons are going strong

Local NC watermelons are going strong, and we’re seeing a lot of beautiful melons coming to the market.  Now is a great time to feature them in a delicious salad, dessert or signature cocktail!

New crop Bartlett pears are beginning, which signals the new season for apples is just around the corner.  We’re looking forward to a good year as many reports predict increased volume over last year.  Shortly after Bartlett’s begin, we’ll be seeing new crop Galas and then the season will be off and running.

Lettuce harvests are getting back to normal with solid numbers and good quality.  Typical summertime schedule, so barring any heavy rains or anything else, we should see smooth sailing for a while.

East coast blueberries are slowing down as their season is almost finished.  We’ll have to move back to California soon for best quality.

Local tomatoes are becoming more plentiful all of the time and quality has been excellent.  Lots of growing areas are bringing on fruit and prices are on the slide.  We’re even seeing some gorgeous varieties of local heirloom tomatoes.

Michigan and Ohio are the primary shipping points for squash, corn, pepper, cucumbers and other vegetables right now.  Their season is going strong and supplies and quality have been very good.    With many local seasons in full swing availability is plentiful, farmers from coast to coast are able to fulfill local demand, and volume is abundant.  However, quality is a little inconsistent and we expect this situation to remain for the next week or two, as usual during this time of year, things can change quickly due to the volatility of small/local growing deals.  You can expect strong volume for the next two weeks.

A wife asks her husband, “Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have avocados, get 6.  A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk.

The wife asks him, “Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?”

He replied, “They had avocados.”
