May 15th, 2023 Supply Update: Happy Mother’s Day! Blueberries – Our local farmers have started their season.

Blueberries – Should continue locally well into July and then we’ll make the transition to more Northern states like New Jersey and Michigan.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Blueberries – Our local farmers have started their season. Prices and quality are starting out great. We’re expecting a great harvest which should last until July or so. Feature blueberries on your summer menus.

Asparagus – We are featuring standard local asparagus from Faison in Sampson County right now. It doesn’t get fresher than this!

Avocados – Pretty weather in the avocado groves has good harvests during the middle of the season. Markets are stable as we move into warmer months and higher demand.

California Products – The predicted shortages on pretty much all vegetables coming out of California have begun. Broccoli, cauliflower and lettuces are the first ones to show the shortfalls because of the high volumes of these items. Prices are higher, but fortunately we’re receiving some beautiful local broccoli that is much more affordable and saving us all some money.

Eastern Vegetables – Chilly nights last week caused a skidding stop to local vegetable harvests. Everyone was looking forward to our local farmers beginning their vegetable season, but they’re about 2 weeks behind their anticipated start. We’ll hopefully have fresh local squash and zucchini this week.

Eggs – Egg prices continue to fall to pre-pandemic levels. There is some discussion of a new bird-flu on the horizon, but it seems to already be figured into the market’s pricing.

Lettuces – Are easing downward as buyers resisted buying at the higher prices that shippers were trying to push so they were forced to bring the market back down. We’re still seeing some quality issues due to the heavy rains in January and February, but the market remains much softer.

Peaches – We should begin our east coast peach season very soon. We’re waiting for them to size up a little bit more before bringing them in stock. After our mild winter and early spring, we’re expecting an excellent season.

Peas – Spring pea season has begun, so give us a call to see what’s available. We’ve had in the shell peas as well as shelled.

Strawberries – The rains last week shut down local strawberries, but we expect to be back into them early this week. They started out beautiful and we should see that again very soon.
