Local Produce – A lot of local items have finished up, because of the hot summer days. We’re still seeing the following items in good quantities from our local farmers…Tomatoes of all kinds, including heirlooms, hard squashes, corn, peppers and eggplant. Summer squashes have started a second harvest, but in a lighter way than the spring.
Asparagus – Asparagus market continues to be tight in volume from all points of origin compared to last year which is keeping pressure on prices. Supplies are expected to continue like this for the next couple of months.
Blueberries – Are winding down on the east coast and up north, so we’ll be relying on California fruit going forward.
Cabbage – Though not generally a very exciting item, cabbage is super plentiful lately and at a great bargain currently. Summertime is the time to feature it with interesting slaws and other hot weather menus.
Celery – This kitchen staple was super-tight and spendy through the spring and early summer, but with several areas harvesting this summer, the market is way down.
Corn – Is winding down in NC, though there are still farmers harvesting limited volumes. Keep featuring them and keep your customers smiling! Other areas are harvesting now too, making this a great time to feature beautiful corn.
Lettuces – Are making the transition from spring fields to summer growing areas and are experiencing some slight gaps in production that should settle quickly.
Potatoes – As we move towards new crop potatoes beginning, shippers are lowering pricing slowly to help them run out of storage potatoes and make room for new potatoes. The transition is expected to be smooth this year.
Strawberries – Had a few weeks of light supply, but are very plentiful again. Quality has been very nice.
Tomatoes – Our local tomato season continues. We have all kinds of local tomatoes and they have been delicious and amazing! Quality is exceptional and pricing has been great.
