August 28th, 2023 Supply Update: Big News – Hurricane Hilary is really working on California’s produce fields.

Hurricane Hilary

Big News – Hurricane Hilary is really working on California’s produce fields. This is the first tropical storm in 80 years in an area that floods with a half inch of water. We’re expecting a strong spike in pricing for all things that come from the west coast as well as quality issues. That much water will drastically shorten the shelf life of all lettuces. Work them closely until they get things dried out over on our left coast.

Local Produce – Hot, Hot days have ended some local seasons and turbo charged others. Tomatoes and squash are going strong and cucumbers are starting again.

Asparagus – Asparagus market continues to be tight in volume from all points of origin compared to last year which is keeping pressure on prices. Supplies are expected to continue like this for the next couple of months.

Cabbage – Though not generally a very exciting item, cabbage is super plentiful lately and at a great bargain currently. Summertime is the time to feature it with interesting slaws and other hot weather menus.

Corn – Is winding down in NC, though there are still farmers harvesting limited volumes. Keep featuring them and keep your customers smiling! Other areas are harvesting now too, making this a great time to feature beautiful corn.

Lettuces – Are seeing quality issues from Hurricane Hilary. Pricing is stronger and will stay that way until the conditions improve.

Potatoes – New crop Idaho harvests have begun, and potato markets are suddenly lower. We’re seeing really pretty potatoes from the fresh fields and a considerable price savings. Red and white potatoes are also in better supplies.

Strawberries – Had a few weeks of light supply, but are very plentiful again. Quality has been very nice.

Tomatoes – Our local tomato season continues. We have all kinds of local tomatoes and they have been delicious and amazing! Quality is exceptional and pricing has been great.

If you plan to start a zoo, you must have 3 polars, 2 blacks and a panda. That’s the bear minimum.
