Asparagus – Asparagus supplies are improving as newer fields begin production in Peru. Prices are down a bit and expected to continue that trend.
Local Produce –Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and squash are still going strong.
Apples – NC has begun their apple harvest and we have several varieties of local apples for you to feature on your menus. Western apple shippers are harvesting more and more varieties as the season continues. We are anticipated to have the largest crop in several years this season, so it will be a great year to promote your apple desserts.
Blueberries – remain extremely tight. Driscoll is projecting they’ll be in very short supply for the next 6-8 weeks due to weather events in Peru. Might be a good time to feature other berries.
Corn – Is winding down in northern states, but Georgia is simultaneously starting their harvest. We expect a much smoother transition than we normally see in the fall this year.
Cucumbers – Are still rolling in North Carolina. Supplies and quality remain strong and pricing is very good.
Grapes – The Table Grape Commission just released its storage report, and it appears volumes are down by as much as 40% compared to this time last year. We can expect prices to continue slowly climbing as we work our way through September and into October. Hopefully, we start to see some relief once South America begins their season in late October.
Greens – Quality has gotten much better this week with the cooler weather. Hot days are tough on greens, making them yellow rather than the dark green of wintertime.
Potatoes – Harvest is still going, and reports remain positive. Good sizing, yields, and quality from most growing regions coupled with more acreage are all pointing to an overall increase in supply. As harvest continues, we are starting to see an easing of the prices. They should stay at lower levels until we reach the Thanksgiving Holiday pull.
Tomatoes – Our local tomato season continues. Quality is exceptional and pricing has been great.
