December 9, 2019 Supply Update: Cold weather in Florida slowed down corn production and has caused gaps in supply in many areas.

Cold weather in Florida slowed down corn production and has caused gaps in supply in many areas. Corn is extremely limited right now and pricing is showing the shortfall.

Mexican rains stopped cucumber harvests abruptly and suddenly the market has a demand exceeds supply situation. Cold temps in Florida have slowed growth and everyone seems to be out at the same time. As Mexican fields dry out we should see better harvests becoming available.

The rains also hit the squash fields and farms that were in a glut situation found themselves out of the squash business overnight. Fortunately Florida has a fair amount coming to maturity and this is stabilizing the market. Prices are lower this week with improved harvests from Florida.

California strawberries are still very limited and, with unstable weather patterns this week in Oxnard, product could be even tighter. While the fruit may look fair/good in the field and at ship-point, it is showing quality issues on arrival. Supplies are short and farmers are struggling to fill orders with nice product. Best advice is to work them closely because they won’t last very long in your cooler.

The Washington apple crop is now completely harvested and in storage. The overall 2019 Washington apple crop is a large crop with estimates coming in around 138 million bushels, which is an increase of over 16% versus last year’s crop. Last year, Washington had one of their smaller crops in the last 5 years that totaled only 117 million cases. This year’s crop is looking like a high-quality crop, but it produced a smaller sized apple than last year and will have much less of the tray fruit in the 64 to 72 count range this season. Currently, there is also great pricing on Honeycrisp apples and Gala apples which both had record harvests this season.

Central American Honeydews and Cantaloupes are arriving now and addling a lot of needed volume to the market and putting pressure on the high prices out of California. Prices are way down, especially on cantaloupes.
