Cantaloupe & Honeydew – Harvests are only happening in Central America right now and supplies are getting a little bit tighter. Also, Peru is having some political unrest causing difficulties in transportation to the ports.

Asparagus – The market remains very short on volume and prices are staying strong as Mexico is not yet showing an increase in harvests yet. Temperatures are still cold there, so the asparagus is not developing at expected rates.

Broccoli & Cauliflower – Mexican and Georgia growers are adding a lot of volume to the market right now, putting pressure on west coast farms and pricing. Quality is very good.

Grapes – Peruvian political demonstrations are slowing or stopping grape shipments from there at a time when they should be at top production. Shortages as a result of the disruptions are keeping markets higher than we’d normally see them right now.

Lettuce – Iceberg and leaf lettuce supplies are readily available this week with good overall quality. Markets are steadily going down as the supplies are there to fill demand now.

Potatoes – Demand has eased off on potatoes as many consumers count carbs and calories to bring in the new year. January and February are typically slow months for potato consumption. Though we’re seeing sluggish demand currently, shortages will continue all year. Though demand is slow, Idaho potato sheds are unable to transfer potatoes when it gets as cold as it was last week, so we may see some short term gaps until things warm up.

Strawberries – Product availability is very limited this week in California growing regions due to cold weather and the Valentine’s Day pull. Central Mexico has limited availability and Florida is also limited due to weather and holiday business. This is coming together as a demand exceeds supply situation going into Valentine’s Day, so we’ll see how it unfolds. Get your orders in early.

Squash, Peppers & Cucumbers – Supplies are much increased, both from Florida and Mexican fields. Pricing and quality are improving with the stronger harvests. Hard squashes like butternut, spaghetti and acorn are still widely available and a great choice this time of year.

Q: How do you get a country girl’s attention?
